Good starter bike...

Hey riders/racers! I need a bit of advice. My son is 5 and a half, and has been riding a bicycle w/out training wheels for over a year, and is about 47 inches tall, but only wieghs 43 lbs. He has a older 2 smoker (mid 80's) pw 50, but it seems to small for him. He has ridden it a few times, but it has been completely overhauled; new piston kit, new carb, the dang thing can kick my xr 70's a$$!! For real! Not a really great thing to have him on in my personal opinion! I'm not looking for him to race or anything, I just want something he's comfortable on and won't kill him (yes, he has ALL the gear) Thanks in advance for the help!

Look into the CRF50 or JR80. Or at 5, he might be a good size for an race 50. Look into the LEM50, Cobra50, polini50, or KTM sx50. The KTM has been known to have problems more so than the other bikes.

Honda CRF50's last forever and you can even upgrade them into an adult bike when he outgrows it.
There are 1000's of parts for them.

The JR80 is a decent starter bike

Thanks, like I said, I'm not looking for him to race (right now), just to learn the basics, get comfortable and have fun...he's got PLENTY of land to ride on. He just seems scared to death of it, and it just started in the past few months. He rode his pw twice, now he wants nothing to do with it. We have a Suzuki 80 quad I take his little bro riding with, plus I personally have xr70 (I may upgade again) and the hubby has a '88 Suzuki 500, race ready. I think I'll check good ole EBAY and see what's FOR SALE!!! Thanks again!!! :)

shoot for the crf50 jr80 give him your xr70 and get another bike for you. The crf70 would fit him well.

ebay is a good thing!
i got a 2003 rm250 for only $2922. But remember shipping is $349-$449

if you ship, use forward air, they do good job.

Good luck! 8)

I would happily give up my xr70, but it's a bit taller then the new ones...we had him on the new Honda 70 at the shop, and it did fit him ok, but it's the speed thing I have a problem with for right now, let alone the age thing. He's only 5 and a beginner, I don't wanna feel I'm giving him too much too soon, also him having to feel it's too much for him.

DANG, you got a real good deal on that RM! Unfortunately not many people sell dirt bikes on Ebay in Maryland...I'm not looking to pay as much for shipping as I do the bike. I have NO problem traveling up to 150 miles round trip to pick one up though! LOL Seriously, If it's a good deal, I'll travel to VA, DE, PA, NJ WV... Yes, Ebay is a good thing, we have bought most of our gear on Ebay at fantastic prices! Looking for the boots now, the little one wants Alpinestars, but I want to shop around for the best boot for the buck!

Speaking of giving up my xr70, I saw an article in my Dirt Rider mag about the new CRF250JR, anyone have any opinions on this bike? It would be the perfect size for me, I think...I'm 5'7" and 120lbs. I've had the CR125 before, back when I actually used to ride...now I gotta putt-putt with the kids, hence the XR70, but I'd really like something with some grip and go again! Gotta keep up with the bigger boys sometimes, ya know what I mean? Any comments on the new bike?

Sorry, ramblin' again, sorry...

get yourself a fun bike!

does the throttle on your XR70 have a throttle limit? you can make it so the throttle won't twist all the way and it won't go as fast. I know the JR80 has oneand its about the same size as a crf70.

As for yourself, any 125 class bike will fit you well,
go with a used 125. You can get them for a good price now. The crf250r is aslo a good bike.

They even make a trail version wich is the same bike, but with headlight, e-start, and a new gearbox and exhaust pipe.

I think the best value would be a 2002-2004 2-stroke. But they are snappy, you might like the easy power of a 4-stroke.

Pick your weapon :P

Thanks Brian...My ike does not have the throttle limit to it, but our suzuki quad does, but I want him on 2 wheels before 4.

I'll check out the Suzuki jr80 and the crf70 Honda has before we make any decision on it.

Also, I had a 125 about 15 years ago, wasn't all that impressed. I'm sure they'vemade plenty of changes and impovements since then. Also, where we ride, trail mostly, we do have a mini flat track, and MX track on the property, but I prefer the trails. I want something I really don't have to do much shifting on, hense the thumper and apposed the 2 smoker...

Thanks again, you've been a BIG help!

A 125 would be plenty of juice for you! If your getting anything over 2000, any of the bikes would be fine. KX,CR,RM, and YZ. A crf250 and a yz250f are also sweet bikes. Heres a trick to limit throttle on his pw80. Find a stak of washers or something that can go inbetween the carb return spring and where it seats(not in the slide, on the screw in portion). This will allow the spring to tension up earlier not allowing it to hit ful throttle.

Hey twosmoker...Thanks for the tip, I just may try that! Sounds like it may work better then just buying a whole new bike for him right now! I need on if he decides to take my XR70!

Have any of you guys seen or tried out the NEW CRF250JR yet? I'm seriously considering that bike for myself...if the reviews aren't what they claim in Dirt Rider or any of the other mags, I just may have to go back to the 125, I wish they still had the Honda XR100, that was a FUN bike!!! I'd like to stick with Honda, been on once since I was 5, I'm now almost 35, (OOPS, I just gave away my age!) so it's been a very trusty brand for me!
