I'm not so sure about this...

Okay, I just saw a movie on TV about motocross and thought, hey, why not?

Now, that may seem silly, but I'm like that a lot. The truth is, I don't know much about motocross. And I'm a girl. I thought I'd get that out in the open right away, and I don't take any prejudice, okay?

I thought maybe I could give motocross a try. I'm not allowed to until I finish the eight grade (Loooooooooooong Story) but I'd love any info you guys (and GALS!) can give. Does anyone think I shouldn't? And also, I'm way into mechanics and carpentry and all that jazz, so I'm totally pumped about the idea of working to make the bike tick.

Spend some time researching about the gear in motocross.
The bikes.
Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Ktm, Kawasaki
Those are the major brands of bike manufacturers.
you will be looking for a smaller sized bike. An 80cc 2stroke or larger 4stroke like a yamaha ttr 125L. I know you probably dont know the difference between 4 and 2 stroke. but there are 2 types of the most common combustion engines in our world today.
Search the net on 4stroke and 2stroke engines to get an idea of the two types. 2strokes have more power per cubic centimetre of engine size. aka cc's. (in theory twice the horse power)
racing consists of many areas, not just tracks. There is trail racing, hill climbing, baja, outdoor track (motocross), indoor racing tracks (supercross or arenacross).

No the bikes are not meant for roads. And you also need a drivers permit/lisence to drive anything on the road.

basically learn what you can by doing searces on the internet.. First and foremost actually, check out this site. www.motocross.com

yes, motocrossed is a kool movie, one of my fav's next to supercross the movie(not even out yet  )

anyways, theres a few choices,a good starter bike would be...

Honda: xr/crf100,crf150
Yamaha: TTR-125/125L
Suzuki: Drz125/125L
Kawasaki: KLX 125(do they make an L version?)

those would be great for you to start out on,you could also race any of those in the 85 class,to get a feel for racing

if you do plan to get serious in racing, you will need a mx bike...

Honda: CR85/80,CR85/80 Big wheel
Yamaha: Yz85/80
Kawasaki: Kx85/80, Kx100
Suzuki: Rm85/80, Rm100
Ktm: Sx85, Sx85 big wheel(formarly known as the Sx105)

and, when you do plan to race, just ask around your local track for some motocross org's

as for money,it can get quite expensive.either get a job,or dont piss of your parents

good luck

First off, I would like to commend you on your literary skills. I can't imagine you'll have any trouble finishing eighth grade. (Unless you suck at math  )

You're about the same age as my daughter who has no interest in getting dirty at all! Maybe when you get going at it you can talk her into it, I sure haven't had any luck.

The CR85 is a good choice, but so is just about any other 85cc bike, so don't get hooked on any brand until you've shopped around.

For a used 85, and all the gear you'll need, you're looking at an investment of around $3000. Make sure you pass eighth grade with A's and B's!!!

A CRF450 will kill you before you learn to ride it!!

Get a cycle trader for your area, and look at two stroke bikes between 85cc, and 100cc, or four stroke bikes between 125cc, and 200cc.

The two strokes will generally have two letters before the cc's, and the four strokes will generally have three.

Example:Yamaha two stroke= YZ85
              Yamaha four stroke=TTR125

              Suzuki two stroke=RM100
              Suzuki four stroke=DRZ125

This isn't always the case, but it's a good rule of thumb if you're looking through a cycle trader, and you're not sure what's what.

I thought about putting my CD player into my helmet and listening to some music while riding, but I came to the conclusion that that's not a good idea. Two reasons why..

1. You probably won't be able to hear the music over the bike.
2. You'll concentrate on one over the other and that could eventually get your hurt.

If you are wanting to race, I say get an 85 and take it slow at first. They are a very fast, but fun, bike to ride. If you aren't willing to work on the bike as needed and if you are not willing to "rebuild" the motor every once in a while, then get a 4-stroke trail bike. I prefer the TT-R125 or the CRF150. Both good bike, although the CRF150 will be heavier then the TT-R125.

Ask the dealer what they think would be a good learning bike for you, and once they tell you, remember that and come on here and tell us what bike they told you. They will try to sell you a bike that's to small for you, so you can ride it for a couple of months, go back, trade it in and get a new one from them, that's every dealers trick. It worked on me, they told me to get an XR100 but I only had it for 4 months before I got bored of it, then I got a CR85 Expert and I never regreted that! Great bike!

I say get an 85 and take it slow, but if you are kind of the "girly girl" type, then a 4-stroke should work just find for you. And no affense to the girly girl comment, I just wouldn't put a girl who is scared to break her nail on a 85 2-stroke, you know what I mean?

Good luck!

All you have to do is know what model bikes are racing and trail bikes and you won't get confused anymore. It can be confusing, but once you get the hang of it, everything will come nice and easy.

The main difference between a 2-stroke engine and a 4-stroke engine is the number of times the spark plug fires every time the piston goes up. A 2-stroke engine fires every rotation (rotation - everytime the piston goes up and down, that equals 1 rotation) and a 4-stroke engine fires every other rotation. 1 cc of a 2-Stroke equals 2 cc's of a 4-stroke. (ie. That's why a 250 4-stroke (aka. 250F) can run with the 125 2-Strokes. Those 2 bikes are about equal, just a matter of what stroke you want, 2 or 4. The 250 2-strokes are the same as a 450 4-Stroke (aka. 450F).

You determine the size of the bike by the diameter across the piston, so if you a bike that is 85cc's, that means that the diameter across the piston is 85 Cubic Centimeters. Same with a 125, 250... etc.

If you would like me or anybody else to clear anything else up that may not be real clear to you right now, all you have to do is ask and I know I will do my best my explain everything and why it's like that.

Hope I made a few more things more clear for you. Hope I helped!

I would suggest try and look into a cheap/used CR80/85. If you wait long enough and look everywhere possible, you'll find somebody that needs to get rid of a CR80/85. Maybe go to races and look around there. I see about 10 - 20 bikes each time I go to a race for sale, and some are cheap, some are more expensive, even though the condition on both of them are VERY similar. All you have to do is look around, you'll find something.

Actually, you don't have to get a CR80/85, any brand would do. All the 85's are very nice and will perform very close to the same. Just find the best deal and go with it.

Remember, don't be scared to ask questions, that's the only way you'll learn.

Don't you need a bike first? I would worry about getting a bike and gear before you worry about lessons.

Good idea...

And, How much money are you allowed to spend on a bike?

I started on a crf150 and they are real nice bikes, but just real heavy. Now my sister(remember stephanie???) has a '05 crf150 that never gets ridden, just when i want to play around on it.

We're short right now.
And my mom wouldn't trust me on my own bike until she knows I can ride!

You said you were from So-Cal right? If so, you may want to go to mxgirls.com , then go to their forum because almost all of the girls on there are from So-Cal, and I'm sure they would be more then happy to help you out. You never know, maybe you can take your mom to one of the local tracks and meet one of the girls from the forum there. She can tell you more about the sport and schools in your area, and your mom can get an idea of what to expect. Just a thought, unless you've already went there for help?

Good luck! Hope to hear from you soon(when you get your new bike  )!
