Team Yamaha's little gamble paid off probably even better than they had imagined, as Matt Goerke put in two great rides to snag the overall win at Southwick. In what was a 'man's track' in every sense of the word, Goerke overcame a wild day of rain, cool weather, and lots of battling through the pack to go 6-1.

It was another first timer in on the top step of the overall podium, and this time it was Justin Barcia in the 250 class doing the honors. Barcia got the best of two motos worth of battling with Ryan Dungey to go 1-3 on the day, which beat out Tyla Rattray's 6-1 and Brett Metcalfe's 4-2. Barcia hounded Dungey both times out for the duration, eventually getting past him each time, although he wasn't really able to pull away.

Ryan Dungey took a 13 point deficit to Christophe Pourcel and turned it into a 17 point lead. Of course, that came with a lot of help from Pourcel, who had almost the worst possible weekend...

Talk about a day you'd rather forget, Pourcel's luck ran out in a big way at Southwick. In the first moto his bike died after he worked his way through the pack and up to 5th when...

...his bike died. He was looking good with a few laps to go in moto one and into 5th when it just quit heading up a hill. It was not a good day for the Frenchman and heir apparent to the 250/Lites throne, as he lost 30 points to Dungey and is now 17 behind going into the final round next weekend in Steel City

That's right, John Dowd is 44 years old and yes, you're hearing this right: He finished 3rd overall at the 2009 Southwick National. Dowdy used his decades of experience at the sandy track to come from way back in moto one to finish up 10th, then spent the entire 2nd moto picking off young factory rider after young factory rider until there was only one left - Goerke. While the Junkyard Dog couldn't quite reel in the new Yamaha factory rider (who's about 20 years younger), he kept him honest to come across the line in 2nd. The 10-2 was good enough for 3rd overall.

It was bound to happen that the current FIM World MX2 Champion would land on the top step of an AMA National podium, and that time finally came this weekend. Rattray totally nailed the 2nd moto start and rode fast, clean and perfect out front while the battles raged on behind him. Brett Metcalfe kept him honest for much of the moto but eventually fell off the pace a bit as Styla marched onward to his first ever moto victory in the U.S. His 6-1 finishes were good enough for 2nd overall, which was also only his 2nd podium, albeit quite an impressive one.

Things were looking good for Justin Brayton at the beginning of the 2nd moto, but if you look closely its plain to see that Chad Reed is sneaking up the inside and is looking for a way to the front. He found it, and laid waste to the field in short order.

Here's Rattray grabbing the holeshot in 250 moto 2, but what you can't see is Pourcel stalling his bike on the inside of the turn. He got up dead last due to not being able to get his KX250F re-lit. It proved to be a very costly error.

Andrew Short pulled a solid holeshot in the 2nd 450 moto, with teammate Tedesco tucked in right behind him. Tyler Bowers blew around the outside in a classic Southwick move - starting way on the outside and blowing around everyone on the inside to nail the holeshot. Bowers held on for 6th, passing both Short and Tedesco in the process.

Reed had the 2nd moto easily locked up, with a huge lead at the halfway point and looking good. Then everything went wrong when the rough Southwick track reached up and grabbed him, throwing him to the ground like a rag doll. He launched over the finish line jump completely sideways and landed that way, resulting in a high side from hell that really looked to put a dent in him as he lay trackside. He did eventually get up and off the track, no word on extent of his injuries (if any) yet.

The spotlight was on Reed, though, as he showed he was clearly the fastest 450 rider in the house at MX338. There was also some talk of him signing a contract to race next year, or at least started serious talks heading in that direction.

These two were this close for most of both motos, with Barcia getting the best of Dungey both times out. While this isn't exactly a 'home track' for Justin, he's certainly spent some time racing here in the past, that makes this the only National track he's had any experience racing on. His result? A win.

The mystery behind Andrew Short continues, as even a holeshot can't seem to produce a solid finish. Andrew faded all the way back to 9th in the 2nd moto, getting passed by a retired 44 year old and several privateers in the process.

Fill-in Monster Kawasaki rider Jake Moss put in a phenomenal first moto performance, ending up 2nd behind Reed and finishing just ahead of local hotshoe Robbie Marshall. His 2nd moto wasn't quite as magical though, as he DNF after a tip-over in a corner.

Tedesco's miserable first moto finishes seem to be getting pretty consistent, as he DNF the first moto but stayed fairly steady in moto 2 to end up 5th. Red Bull Honda riders had a pretty miserable day in general as their riders went 7, 9 and 18th overall for the day.
